Thu, 12 April 2007 The Zero by Jess Walter - Book Review by Professor Africa Fine PBCC South Campus Professor Fine tells us that the title refers to Ground Zero, which has been shortened by some of the police who survived. This is not a romanticizing of 9 11 but rather a story about Brian Remy, a hero cop who wakes up to find that he shot himself in the head just days after the attacks.  There is a surreal, Kafka-esque flavor to this novel that is both disturbing and intriguing.   The novel asks questions about morality, about forgiveness and also, about how September 11th changed us all. Film Review:  Discounted Dreams: High Hopes and Harsh Realities at America's Community Colleges.  Professor Africa Fine reviews this hour long documentary that addresses both the positive and negatives of the community college system.  This fill underlines how important the mission of the community college is.

Professor Africa Fine does a book review for a novel by Tom McCarthy, the book is titled Remainder.  This strange, surreal tale of one man, addressing the question "What would you do if you won the lottery?"  Also, the question "Can money buy happiness?" McCarthy’s novel has an answer.

Professor Africa Fine reviews the book Love is a Mixed Tape by Rob Sheffield.  Rob Sheffield's love of music and memoir of the 1990s, inlcuding the tragic death of his wife of only five years.

Jayson Godfrey gives a movie review for 300, also discusses Disability Awareness week, the Virtual Job Fair, AIDs testing and the Campus Clean Up.

PBCC South Campus Professor Fine tells us that the title refers to Ground Zero, which has been shortened by some of the police who survived. This is not a romanticizing of 9 11 but rather a story about Brian Remy, a hero cop who wakes up to find that he shot himself in the head just days after the attacks.  There is a surreal, Kafka-esque flavor to this novel that is both disturbing and intriguing.   The novel asks questions about morality, about forgiveness and also, about how September 11^th changed us all.

Award winning Professor Samantha Salzinger who has won many art awards and is teaching art at Palm Beach Community College South Campus is interviewed by Professor Quan Cao.  Professor Salzinger discusses her teaching approaches and different classes in art she is currently teaching. Also, she discusses art exhibits that students might want to check out in our area. 

PBCC Professor Africa Fine, reviews the book by Edward P. Jones The Known World. Professor Fine discusses how this book provides a take on a dark chapter of American history that is compelling, compassionate and emotionally gripping.  This is a historical novel set during slavery times in Virginia, but it is about a black slave owner.  Hang on to your seats when you listen to Professor Fine's review of this compelling story of moral intricacy.
